8 Rules Of Etiquette That Define What People Think Of Us At First Glance

It might seem trivial, but we are usually quick to judge people by looking at the kind of shoes they wear or the colors of their clothes. While it is important to dress for the occasion to make an impression, it is also important to follow certain rules of etiquette to build a relationship, be it business or personal.

Here is an interesting read about some essential rules of etiquette that help form a good first impression!

1. Pay Attention To Conversations

Sometimes, while in conversation with a friend, our mind tends to wander and miss out on what the other person is saying. This happens either when the topic of conversation is something that does not interest us or if we are more worried about something else in our life. This tends to create an impression that we are disinterested and rude. Hence, it is always good to stay in the present and be attentive to what the other person is speaking about.

When the topic is something you do not enjoy, it may become difficult for you to give your attention. In such a scenario, try to gently veer the conversation to something that you both like.

2. Do Not Bare Your Soul In Front Of Strangers

Sharing everything with people you barely know is not a really good idea. We must remember that everyone doesn’t have the time to listen to our problems. And if they, sometimes, they’re just not interested. Hence, instead, you can save such conversations for a more private audience of close friends.

When you are with people like your colleagues or acquaintances, who you do not know too well, you should stick to conversations that are generic – a popular movie, a good car that was recently launched, the weather or even traffic, which is less likely to create conflict in the conversation.

3. Wear The Proper Amount Of Perfume

Apart from the way we dress and the makeup essentials we use, perfumes give us an identity and create an aura about us. However sometimes we tend to overdo it, and an overwhelming smell of perfume can be an instant turn-off, even though it is an expensive one. Usually, if you spray the perfume just once on your body, it is enough to keep you fresh throughout the day and people about 2 feet away from you can smell it.

4. Refrain From The Show Of Passion In Public

Couples holding hands in public are considered cute by some. Other than that, any other form of display of affection in public is always frowned upon, especially a tight hug or a kiss or even a loud personal conversation. Some things should be kept for a very personal space because everyone need not know what you feel for your partner.

5. Placing Your Handbag On The Table Is A Big No-No

Placing a huge bag on a table at a restaurant or even a formal meeting is not the right thing to do. This distracts the other person and creates an impression that you do not trust the other person or you are not comfortable in that place. It is classy to always place your handbag either on the floor by your feet or on the back of the chair that you are sitting on.

6. Avoid Slurping Your Drinks

Do you feel that a kid slurping on his beverage is disgusting? Imagine what impression you might create if you slurp on your drink while there are other people having lunch with you. It is best to avoid sipping your drink to the last drop or scraping your food from the plate no matter how tasty your meal may be!

7. Maintain Appropriate Distance With The Opposite Sex

We usually tend to get excited when we see someone we know in a place that is least expected. In our excitement, we forget that we are in a public space and run ahead to give that person a hug. Imagine if the person pushes you back, especially if he is with someone.

We should learn to control our emotions and restrain ourselves to a formal handshake or a casual nod of acknowledgement when we meet someone at a public place. This will save both you and your friend an unnecessary episode of awkwardness.

8. Be Polite

Being polite will take you a long way in building relationships. It does not hurt to smile and nod at your neighbor or thank your driver for driving you to the office every day. These small gestures uplift your image, and people around you hold you in higher esteem.

People around us notice the little things we do or say in our everyday life and form an opinion about us. So, modifying our habits slightly can make us a lot more socially likable.
